Missing teeth can be more than just a cosmetic issue. They can also lead to speech impediments, teeth shifting, increased risk of tooth decay, increased risk of periodontal disease, a change in bite, and Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ). Bridges are one of the treatment options we offer to replace multiple missing teeth or multiple decayed teeth.
The first step in doing a dental bridge is to administer a local anesthetic and begin preparing the supporting teeth. If the supporting teeth are damaged or decayed, we may have to fix them first so that they will be strong enough to support your bridge.
After we prepare the supporting teeth, we will take an impression of the desired area. This impression will be sent off to a dental lab, where they will make a custom fit bridge for you. A perfect fit is important to prevent tooth decay and other oral health problems in the future.
While we wait for the final bridge to return to our office we will place a temporary bridge. The temporary bridge protects your gums and teeth from further damage. Once the permanent bridge is ready, you’ll return to our office for another appointment where we will make sure it fits properly, then will permanently cement it in place.
