What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that replaces one or in some cases more than one missing teeth.  The inner part looks like a screw and it is made of a titanium alloy.  The outer part is a prosthetic piece made to have the same appearance and texture as a natural tooth.  In time, the bone cells develop around the implant, which reinforce it into the jaw and fusing it with the surrounding bone.  Finally you will have a new tooth, or teeth, to help restore your smile!  Dental implants are virtually suitable for any age as long as you are an eligible candidate.

What Does The Implant Procedure Involve?

First of all, you will need to find out if you are an implant crown/bridge candidate from your dentist. We will happily discuss all of your options with you.  Together, we will decide if dental implants are the best option for you.  To find out if you are a candidate the dentist will take x-rays, and complete a thorough examination.
If You Are An Eligible Candidate for An Implant Crown/Bridge, The Following Steps Will Be Taken:

1.) Removal of the tooth/teeth, if they are still present, and the surgical placement of the implant(s) into the bone.  This is usually done in an Oral Surgeon or Periodontist’s Office (we will give you a referral & help set up your appointment with them), with a local anesthetic.  After surgery, there is a healing period.  During this time, the implants will fuse to the bone by a process known as ‘osseointegration’.

2.) After you have healed, you will return to our office with the parts the Oral Surgeon or Periodontist provided you with (or they may send them to our office).  We will remove the healing screw from your mouth, and place the implant post, which will be what the final crown or bridge will be built upon.  We will then take an impression of your mouth as well as an x-ray to make sure everything is positioned properly.  We then will remove the post and put the healing screw back in.  Before you leave our office, you will make your appointment to place the final crown or bridge.

3.) We will send the impression as well as the post to our local dental lab so they can construct the custom crown or bridge.

4.) You will return to our office for the final placement.  We will remove the healing screw once again, and place the post once again.  We will then make sure the crown fits your mouth perfectly.  Once the crown or bridge has a perfect fit in your mouth, we will then permanently cement it to the post.  Your smile will now be renewed!
