Night Guards
Night guards are used for patients who have TMJ Disorder or excessive bruxism.  Bruxism is a grinding and teeth clenching issue some people may have, which usually occurs mainly at night.  The usage of these night guards for both TMJ disorder and bruxism can benefit the patient.  This device will prevent grinding of the teeth while you are asleep, taking care of the bruxism issue, as well as help keep your jaw aligned for TMJ disorder issues.

If you suspect you have TMJ disorder or bruxism, please let us know, and the doctor's will be sure to complete thorough examinations as well as have you fill out a TMJ history form for our records, as well as insurance purposes.  If the doctor's diagnose you with one of these issues, we will begin the  process of creating a custom fit night guard for you.

First, impressions will be taken of your mouth so we are able to create the perfect fit.   The doctor will then pour up the models from the impressions he had taken.  With the lower model of your mouth, the doctor will use a machine, in our very own lab in our office, to heat the guard material to form to your teeth perfectly.  After this step, they will then add acrylic to the guard to prevent grinding.

Once the guard is complete, we will have you come back into the office, and the doctor will make sure the guard fits your mouth just right.  This step is very important, in order for the guard to do its' job, it needs to have a perfect fit!  This is why office made night guards are much more effective than store bought or pre-made night guards.  The fit needs to be custom in order to achieve the best results.
Sports Guard
All athletes, no matter their age, for contact sports should wear a sports guard to protect their teeth.  Here at Drs. Golovan & Golovan we will make the process of fitting and producing a custom made sports guard fast and easy, just like our night guards.

A typical store bought sports guard will fit loosely and does not offer the protection our in office sports guards do.  There are mouth guards and sports guards that can be boiled at home for a better than an off of the shelf fit, but these also do not provide full protection.  A custom in office made sports guard from our office offers full protection for the entire mouth and can be range in difference thickness levels so it is not to be a nuisance to the patient and is made to their liking, as well as comfortable to them.

If you are interested in a sports guard, please let us know, and we can get the process started.  First the dentist will take impressions of your mouth, so we can get that custom fit.  The dentist will then use your desired thickness and make the guard in our own lab in office.

Once this process is finished, you will come into our office, and the dentist will make sure the guard has a perfect fit.  Once again this is very important, the better fit, the more protection you will receive from the guard.
How Do I Care For My Mouth Guard?
Rinse your mouth guard with cold water or with a mouth rinse before and after each use and/or clean it with toothpaste and a toothbrush.
Occasionally clean the mouthguard in cool, soapy water and rinse it thoroughly.
Place the mouth guard in a firm, perforated container to store or transport it. This permits air circulation and helps to prevent damage.
Protect the mouth guard from high temperatures – such as hot water, hot surfaces, or direct sunlight – to minimize distorting its shape.
Occasionally check the mouth guard for general wear. If you find holes or tears in it or if it becomes loose or causes discomfort, replace it.
Bring the mouth guard to each regularly scheduled dental visit to have your dentist exam it.
