Make Healthy Food Choices

A healthy diet includes foods from all of the 5 food groups: grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy and protein.  Each food benefits your body differently.  Eating a mixture of healthy foods will ensure your body gets all the essential nutrients.  Eating a well balanced diet will help prevent diseases linked with being overweight, such as diabetes and heart disease.  It will also help keep your teeth and gums healthy.
You can have a healthy diet by following these simple steps:

- Choose your foods wisely from each food group.
- Eat foods that are low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol and salt (sodium).
- Avoid foods and drinks high in added sugar, which will help decrease your risk for tooth decay.  This includes beverages such as soda, sports drinks or flavored waters.  
- Limit your snacking throughout the day.  If you do chose to snack, be sure to make healthy choices like, fruits, nuts or cheese.  Eat sweets with meals instead of snacks.
- WATER.  Drink water between meals.  Water overall has many benefits for your health,  Be sure to drink water after eating as well to help wash away any left over food particles.
