Keeping Your Mouth Clean

In order to prevent tooth decay and gum disease, daily cleanings, at home, are critical.  Everyday the bacteria on your teeth becomes plaque, which is a sticky film that covers your teeth.  If plaque is not removed it can irritate both your teeth and gums and cause irritation and swelling.  Brushing and cleaning in between your teeth daily always helps remove any food and plaque from your mouth.  Be sure to include the following tips in your everyday oral care routine.
Brushing
It is important that you brush your teeth AT LEAST twice a day.  Use a fluoridated toothpaste, unless you are otherwise instructed.  Use a soft-bristled toothbrush in a size and shape which will fit your mouth comfortably.  Once your toothbrush show signs of wear and the bristles become dual, which is usually about every three months, be sure to change your tooth brush.
Flossing
You will need to use floss or another between-the-teeth cleaner every day in order to remove food and plague from between the teeth and under the gumline.  If you find floss difficult to use, there are floss holders or other between the teeth cleaners.  In our office we recommend Stim-U-Dents, which are special picks that reach between the teeth.

Mouth Rinses
There are many different types of mouth rinses out there.  there are ones made to freshen breath, help prevent and control tooth decay, reduce plaque and tartar and to prevent or reduce gingivitis.  You can rinse before or after brushing, but do not skip on brushing or flossing!  Your dentist can help you chose which mouth rinse may work the best for you.
NOTE:  When shopping for toothbrushes, floss, mouth rinses or other dental products, look for the products that have the ADA seal on the package (pictured above).  Seeing this seal means that the product has met the ADA's standards for effectiveness and safety.
